On May 5th, 2012, the Bellows Falls Rotary Club held their annual penny sale.  This is a fundraiser that gives back to the community by way of donations to community service providers like Our Place, Parks Place and also toward scholarships for our high school students.

There is a great effort by all Rotarians to solicit local businesses for prize donations and selling raffle tickets before the actual day of the sale.  Rotarians set up raffle ticket booths at Lisai’s Market, Shaw’s and Penguin Mart and volunteer their time to sell the tickets.  The raffle ticket prizes are cash denominations from $50 to $500 with an extra $25 if you are present at the time of the drawing.

All Rotarians would like to take a moment to thank our coordinator of such events as the Spaghetti Dinner AND the Penny Sale.  Rotarian Raynie Laware gives these events more than anyone could imagine.  She spends many months preparing and collecting prizes before distributing a list of contributing businesses who have donated in the past and then asks that we contact others if we have contacts.  Raynie collects all of the prizes and stores them in a safe location.

The night before the Penny Sale, Rotarians gather to organize and tag all prize donations.  Saturday afternoon a few of us load trucks, drive the precious cargo to the Bellows Falls Union High School where the Rotarians set up the color coded rounds.

The sale consists of three rounds of at least one hundred prizes.  Each round has a grand prize.  This year grand prizes were two bicycles and a kayak.  The winners of the bikes were lucky Alan Cushman and John Fiske and the lucky winner of the kayak was Roger Riccio.

The raffle ticket winners:  $50.00 to Peter Dearborn of Bellows Falls, $50.00 plus $25.00 because she was present, Linda Furgat, Madeline Arms of No. Walpole, NH stayed for the drawing increasing her $150.00 win to $175.00.  John Laware won $250.00 and the $500.00 grand prize winner Kitty Foster of No. Walpole increased her winnings $25.00 by being present for the drawing.

The Bellows Falls Rotary Club would like to thank all of those generous supporters of such a wonderful event.
