District Governor Janice McElroy and her husband Jim came for breakfast on 10/27/11.

A Visit from District Governor, Janice McElroy

On October 27th, we were honored to have our District Governor, Janice McElroy and her charming husband, Jim joined us for our breakfast meeting at Kurn Hattin Homes.  Along with the great breakfast provided by the Kurn Hattin Homes kitchen staff, we had the chance to listen to what District Governor Jan has been up to.

A reminder from District Governor, Jan, the Little Red School House Paul Harris Memorial Garden pavers are still available for clubs to purchase.  A large bronze Rotary wheel is the centerpiece with concrete pavers on the circumference with bricks between the spokes and center.  The sale of these pavers will “enable the Foundation to build up an endowment fund that will help ensure the self sufficiency of this historic building”.

Our District Governor spoke of the team in Pakistan that administered Polio vaccinations on October 24th, World Polio Day.  There were members from Rotary District 7870, who assisted in this effort to eradicate Polio.

New Hampshire and Vermont were devastated by Tropical Storm Irene.  In an effort to help those who were affected the most, our district is participating in the Vermont Recovery Matching Grant effort.  Our goal was $250,000.  We have exceeded our goal reaching, so far, a sum over $260,000.

October 30th is the due date for the Group Study Exchange applications (GSE) for an expenses paid trip to Germany.  If you know of anyone between the ages of 25-40 who may qualify for this trip and is interested in traveling as a part of the GSE, urge them to get their applications in.

District Governor Jan encourages our club to sponsor or co-sponsor new members along with managing committee members to attend Rotary Leadership Institute at the Stafford Technical Center in Rutland, Vermont, on November 5th.  You can register at http://www.rlinea.com/Registration.htm

November 10th is the Foundation Dinner at the Jackson Gore Inn, Okemo, Ludlow, Vermont.  Registration is on the District 7870 website.

District Governor, Jan, brought with her Rotary International’s President, Kalyan Banerjee’s message and encouraged us to reach within to ask, “Why are you a Rotarian?”  RI President Kalyan Banerjee’s message is part of the following that is an excerpt from his speech from the New Orleans RI Convention in May:

“In order to achieve anything in this world, a person has to use all the resources he or she can draw on. And the only place to start is with ourselves and within ourselves. And the questions we need to ask ourselves are: Why am I here? Why are you here? I believe it is because we all seek a sense of fulfillment in our lives, and to achieve that fulfillment, we have to find harmony between our inner self and the outer self. The inner dimension is our desires, our will, our spirit – and our outer dimension is the action we take and the image we create. That is why I am asking you to reach within and unleash your inner power and then use it to embrace everything and everyone around you.”

“Go ahead: First reach within yourself, and then move on – confidently, firmly – toward the targets you have set for yourselves. Discover yourself, develop the strengths within you, and then, unhesitatingly, unflinchingly, go forth and encircle the world, to embrace humanity. And that, my brothers and sisters in Rotary, is going to be our theme for the coming year: Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.”
